KEY BISCAYNE MAYOR UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION - WANTS THE VILLAGE TO PAY $650 AN HOUR FOR ATTORNEY TO REPRESENT HER

NUMBER 99  -  SEPTEMBER 28, 2018

Public officials under criminal investigation in Miami-Dade County - especially in an upscale, high maintenance community like the Village of Key Biscayne are rare occurrences, and so the information that I received, including a response to a public records request made by someone else to the State Attorney's Office that prompted the following response was very intriguing.

The only information that I've been able to obtain is that this investigation centers on a decision by the Mayor to tell people to leave a public meeting because she supposedly claimed that the meeting wasn't public.'

What the meeting was about I have not heard.

When allegations of either civil or criminal activity occurs that alleges that a public official has misbehaved during the course of carrying out their official duties, they are allowed to have the legal representation paid for by the taxpayers.

The idea however, that the Mayor of the Village of Key Biscayne would be allowed to go out on her own and hire a lawyer for $650 an hour is bullshit.

That kind of unilateral decision of being allowed to choose an attorney without any regard for costs should never be allowed.

In the City of Miami for example, the city goes out and hires outside counsel all of the time to represent both public officials and public employees.  They have a cap of $200 an hour.

It's obvious that the Village of Key Biscayne might not have considered the costs of hiring outside counsel in the past to represent any of the elected officials against alleged criminal charges, but the Village Council, and their Village Attorney should bring this issue up at their next Council meeting, because at $650 an hour these costs could soon begin to start adding up to very serious money, and then of course there's the pesky question of whether Madam Mayor might have actually committed the crimes alleged, in which case the resident of the Village will have gotten screwed twice.

Even in the Village of Key Biscayne, It's Miami, Bitches!
